Tier 1 Solar Panels: What the Grade Actually Means

“Tier 1” is a bankability rating, not a quality medal. Here is how to read a datasheet properly and compare two quotes on equal terms.

  • Tier 1 meansBankable manufacturer, not best panel
  • Watch in SacramentoTemperature coefficient
  • Fire ratingClass A, always
  • Compare onPrice per watt + datasheet

“Tier 1” does not mean what the sales sheet implies

Tier 1 is a bankability classification, originally from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. It identifies manufacturers whose products have been financed by commercial banks in non-recourse deals — in other words, manufacturers that lenders believe will still exist in ten years to honour a warranty. It says nothing directly about efficiency, degradation rate or build quality.

That is still useful: a twenty-five year warranty from a company that folds in year six is worthless, and bankability is a reasonable proxy for survival. But a panel is not good because it is Tier 1. It is insurable because it is Tier 1. Judge the panel itself on its datasheet.

The five numbers that actually matter

SpecificationWhat it tells youGood range today
Module efficiencyWatts per square metre — matters most when roof space is limited20–23%
Temperature coefficientOutput lost per degree above 25°C. Critical in Sacramento−0.26% to −0.35% per °C
Annual degradationOutput lost per year after the first 0.25–0.45% per year
Year-25 performance warrantyGuaranteed remaining output at year 25 85–92%
Product warrantyCover for defects in the panel itself — separate from performance25–30 years

Why the temperature coefficient matters more here than almost anywhere

Panels are rated at a cell temperature of 25°C. On a Sacramento roof in July, cell temperature routinely reaches 60–70°C. At a coefficient of −0.35%/°C, a panel at 65°C is producing roughly 14% below its nameplate rating. At −0.26%/°C it loses around 10%. That difference lands squarely in your peak production months, on your peak air-conditioning days — which is precisely when you most need the output. It is the single most under-discussed specification in a Central Valley quote.

Class A fire rating

Fire classification applies to the panel and roof covering as a system. Class A is the highest rating and is what should be specified on a California residential roof. It is not an optional upgrade and it should never be a line item you are asked to pay extra for.

How to compare two quotes fairly

  1. Get the model numbers. Not “premium 400W panels”. The exact manufacturer and model, in writing.
  2. Pull both datasheets. They are public. Put the five specifications above side by side.
  3. Compare price per watt, not total price. A 7 kW system and an 8 kW system are not comparable on sticker price.
  4. Check who honours the warranty. Manufacturer, distributor or installer, and what happens if the installer is gone.
  5. Check the inverter separately. It has its own, usually shorter, warranty. See inverter architecture and the four warranty types.

A quote that will not name the equipment

Some proposals deliberately omit model numbers so the price cannot be compared and the equipment can be substituted later. “Or equivalent” in a solar contract is a clause worth striking out before you sign.

FAQ

Questions about quality solar panels

Are American-made solar panels better?

Country of manufacture is a weaker signal than it used to be. Several of the best panels available are made in Asia, and several manufacturers now assemble in the United States using imported cells. Judge the datasheet, the warranty terms and the manufacturer’s financial stability — not the flag. Domestic content can matter for certain commercial tax provisions, which is a separate question for your accountant.

How long do solar panels really last?

Longer than the warranty. Panels do not stop working at year twenty-five; they continue at gradually reduced output. At a typical 0.4% annual degradation a panel is still producing around 90% of nameplate at year twenty-five and roughly 84% at year forty. Inverters, not panels, are what you should expect to replace.

Do more efficient panels produce more power?

Only per square metre. A 22%-efficient 440 W panel and a 20%-efficient 440 W panel produce the same power — the efficient one is simply smaller. Efficiency matters when roof space is the constraint, which on a small North Highlands or central-city roof it often is. On a large Elk Grove roof it may not matter at all, and paying a premium for it can be money wasted.

What about bifacial panels?

Excellent on ground mounts and carports over light-coloured surfaces, where light reflects onto the rear face. On a standard pitched roof with panels close to the surface there is very little rear-side gain, and the premium is rarely justified. It is a genuinely good technology being sold into the wrong applications.
